PROCEDURES
BREAST PROCEDURES
Breast Augmentation
Many women choose to have their breasts enlarged in order to satisfy their own desire for a fuller bustline. Your breasts may not have developed to a size that meets your expectations, or one breast may be significantly smaller than the other. You also may have been happy with your breasts in the past, but feel that they look different now. Often, after weight loss, childbirth or as a result of aging, the breasts lose volume and their shape changes. Breast augmentation can enhance your breast size and shape, and give you the more proportional figure that you always wanted.
Breast Reduction
Patients who undergo breast reduction surgery frequently are seeking relief from physical symptoms caused by the excessive weight of large breasts. Breast reduction usually can solve these problems as well as improve the size and shape of your breasts. Following breast reduction, your breasts will be more proportional to the rest of your body, and clothes will fit you better.
Breast Lifting
Loss of skin elasticity, gravity and other factors such as weight loss, pregnancy and breast-feeding
ultimately affect the shape and firmness of your breasts. Patients who are generally satisfied with the size of their breasts can have a breast lift to raise and firm them, resulting in a more youthful breast contour. Some patients may be unhappy that they have lost a significant amount of breast volume over time. In such cases, implants inserted in conjunction with a breast lift can increase breast size at the same time as the shape and position of the breasts are enhanced.
Breast Reconstruction
Reconstruction of a breast that has been removed due to cancer or other disease is one of the most rewarding surgical procedures available today. New medical techniques and devices have made it possible for surgeons to create a breast that can come close in form and appearance to matching a natural breast. Frequently, breast reconstruction is possible immediately following breast removal(mastectomy), so the patient wakes up with a
breast mound already in place, having been spared the experience of seeing herself with no breast at all.
Gynecomastia - Correction of Enlarged Male Breasts
Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek words for "women-like breasts." Though this oddly named condition is rarely talked about, it's actually quite common. Gynecomastia affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. It may affect only one breast or both. Though certain drugs and medical problems have been linked with male breast overdevelopment, there is no known cause in the vast majority of cases.
Inverted Nipples or Nipple Inversion
Sometimes the breasts do not develop properly and you end up having nipples that are inverted or have caved into the breast. This condition affects some women, who of course would rather not have it. The nipples tend to retract or invert. The nipples can form a slit or depression when retracted. Such problems come in different degrees of nipple inversion. In the milder forms, manual manipulation can make the nipple come out. In the more severe forms, the nipple cannot be everted.
OTHER PROCEDURES
Liposuction
Liposuction is particularly well-suited for women and men who are of relatively normal weight but have isolated pockets of fat that cause certain areas of their body to appear disproportionate. These localized fat deposits may sometimes be an inherited trait and typically do not respond to dieting or exercise. Liposuction is often the only way to eliminate them. While it is possible to undergo liposuction at almost any age, you will obtain the best results if your skin still has enough elasticity to achieve a smooth contour following
fat removal. When skin is inelastic, as in some older patients, it may not redrape well and a skin tightening procedure may be necessary.
Eye Rejuvenation
Blepharoplasty or aesthetic eyelid surgery is performed on adults of all ages. Some people have blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) to correct problems that are a result of aging, while others have inherited traits that cause them to seek treatment as early as their 20s or 30s. Blepharoplasty is one of the most frequent surgeries performed by plastic surgeons. It is also one of the first surgical procedures people get. "Tired and aged" eyes are one of the earliest stigmatas of aging.
Facelifting
A face lift surgery (whether it is a surgical face lift or non-surgical or weekend face lift) restores smoother, more pleasing contours to your face and neck. It can help you look as good as you feel, and perhaps feel younger than you are. There are many different types of face lift surgeries and a personal consultation with our Chicago plastic surgeon is the best place to start.
Forehead Lifting
A forehead lift is often performed to treat conditions associated with aging. It may be done in conjunction with other rejuvenative surgery to achieve a more harmonious facial appearance. A forehead lift is also appropriate for treatment of certain inherited traits. Younger adults who have a low brow or who already have deep frown lines due to stress or overactivity of muscles may benefit from the procedure.
Nasal Reshaping (non surgical nose job here too)
Plastic surgeons usually recommend that patients wait until they are at least 14 or 15, and possibly older for boys, before undergoing rhinoplasty. This is because the nose may not be fully developed at a younger age. If you are a teen, your plastic surgeon will want to be certain that you have thought carefully about surgery and that the desire to change your appearance is based on your own feelings rather than those of your parents or friends.
Lip Enhancement
Lip augmentation creates fuller, plumper lips and reduces fine wrinkles around the mouth. Lips may be injected with collagen or with fat transferred from another site in the patients body. Both liquid collagen and fat are absorbed and repeat treatments are necessary to maintain results. Newer, longer-lasting options include implantable materials like AlloDerm and SoftForm and injectable materials like Cymetra, Restylane, and Radiance.
Skin Rejuvenation
What are your options to help rejuvenate your skin?: Fotofacial, (No down time skinrejuvenation). Fotolift (No down time wrinkle improvement & skin tightening). Dermabrasion. Microdermabrasion. Chemical Peels. Injectables (Collagen, Radiance, Restylane, Hylaform). Botox. Fat Injections. Cellulite Treatments.
Ear Reshaping
Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is usually done to set prominent ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. Ears that appear to stick out or are overly large can be helped by ear surgery. For the most part, the operation is done on children between the ages of four and 14. Ears are almost fully grown by age four, and the earlier the surgery, the less teasing and ridicule the child will have to endure. Ear surgery on adults is also possible, and there are generally no additional risks associated with ear surgery on an older patient. If you're considering ear surgery for yourself or your child, this information will give you a basic understanding of the procedure-when it can help, how it's performed, and what results you can expect. It can't answer all of your questions, since a lot depends on your individual circumstances. Please be sure to ask your doctor if there is anything you don't understand about the procedure.
Hair Restoration
Hair Transplantation y age 50, about 50% of American menand a substantial number of womenare affected by hair loss, much of which is hereditary. Micro-hair transplantation is a state-of-the-art hair transplantation technique that has replaced "plugs" or larger grafts of hair.
Technique: Most micro-hair transplant procedures (individual hair micrograft restorations) use local
anesthesia and are performed on an outpatient basis. Other procedures such as flap surgery, require general anesthesia and are performed in a surgical setting. After approximately six weeks, the transplanted hair will fall out and be replaced about three months later when the new hair grows in. To achieve sufficient density, several sessions may be required. Hair transplantation is a progressive process requiring hundreds of micro-grafts, each of which will generally contain from one to three hairs mini-grafted from a donor site on the side or back of the head. They are randomly implanted in the bald (or thinning) area so that they will grow in a natural pattern and produce an undetectable result.
Facial Implants
Cheek Implants: Rather than inserting artificial, soft silastic implants over the cheek bones, Dr. Speron creates more natural cheek augmentations by injecting microfat transplants into the region. Fat is harvested from an area of the body that is not wanted and transplanted to the cheeks using tiny, specialized transplant needles. Dr. Speron's exciting new fat injection technique results in up to 90% of the fat surviving and produces a very natural, beautiful looking cheek augmentation. The area of the fat harvest can also be sculpted with ultrasonic liposuction after the transplantation is completed.
Chin Implants: Rather than inserting an artifical chin implant, Dr. Speron creates more natural chin augmentations by injecting microfat transplants into the region. Fat is harvested from an area of the body it is not wanted and is transplanted to the chin using tiny specialized transplant needles. Dr. Speron's exciting new fat transplant technique results in up to 90% of the fat surviving and produces a very natural, beautiful looking chin augmentation. For patients who do not want a fat transplant, their own chin bone can be gently broken and moved forward.
Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 500,000 new cases are reported each year-and the incidence is rising faster than any other type of cancer. While skin cancers can be found on any part of the body, about 80 percent appear on the face, head, or neck, where they can be disfiguring as well as dangerous. The purpose of this brochure is to educate you about the different types of skin cancer, their causes, and preventive measures you can take; to help you know when to consult a doctor; and to explain the role of the plastic surgeon in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer and other skin growths.
Scar Revision
Scars-whether they're caused by accidents or by surgery- are unpredictable. The way a scar develops depends as much on how your body heals as it does on the original injury or on the surgeon's skills. Many variables can affect the severity of scarring, including the size and depth of the wound, the blood supply to the area, the thickness and color of your skin, and the direction of the scar. How much the appearance of a scar bothers you is, of course, a personal matter. While no scar can be removed completely, plastic surgeons can often improve the appearance of a scar, making it less obvious through the injection or application of certain steroid medications or through a surgical
procedure known as a scar revision.
