PROCEDURES
Breast Enhancements:
Breast Reduction
The discomfort of heavy and drooping breasts associated with pain in the back, neck, and shoulder area can be relieved by breast reduction. Scars around the areola and vertically down to the breast fold will generally soften, flatten, and lighten over several months. Some loss of breast sensation and inability to breast feed are willing trade offs for this popular procedure.
Following mastectomy for breast cancer, an immediate or delayed reconstruction can be performed. Tissue expanders using saline implants or flaps of tissue in combination from the back or abdomen can be used to create a breast mound. The TRAM flap (transverse rectus muscle flap) is most popular to create a natural appearing breast. The nipple and areola are reconstructed usually as a separate procedure using composite skin fat flaps, skin graft, or tattooing.
Breast Augmentation
The breast is a symbol of femininity, nurturing and female sexuality. Saline or silicone breast implants are placed behind the glandular or pectoral muscles through small incisions in the breast fold, around the areola, or through the axilla. The goal is to achieve a soft breast in proportion to the hips and waist with individual patient preferences in mind. Epidemiological studies have not shown a higher incidence of breast cancer or connective tissue autoimmune diseases with or without breast implants in women. A small percentage of patients will develop some firmness or even hardening by scar tissue forming as a natural body response to the silicone envelope. There is also the possibility of leakage of the saline implant or rupture of the silicone rubber envelope which would require replacement of the implant.
Breast Lift
A breast lift is performed to elevate the nipple and areolar to the correct position corresponding to the level of the breast fold. Scars around the nipple or vertically extending to the breast fold will soften, flatten, mature and lighten over many months. A breast implant is commonly inserted at the same time to enhance breast projection and fill the loose skin envelope surrounding the glandular tissue. Breast feeding is generally not affected by this procedure.
